MANTECA HISTORY

It is planned that the postal service will deliver mail within Manteca by 1949

Despite assuming the position of city marshal with such acceptance since the town was incorporated, Maro Litchfield has resigned. A large part of his reason for resigning was the insufficient salary. F. M. Roundtree will take over the office, according to Joshua Cowell, the mayor.

The committee responsible for planning the joint dinner between the Chamber of Commerce and Lions Club this evening at Hotel Manteca is pleased to announce that all plans have been carried out. Toastmaster A. J. Whitaker, president of the Lions Club, will preside and the keynote speaker will be L. M. Morris of Modesto.

As part of last Thursday's monthly meeting at the Hotel Manteca, A. H. Veith, president of the Manteca Chamber of Commerce for the past year, turned over the gavel to his successor, F. Y. Kraft. In his remarks, the outgoing president thanked the directors and members for their loyal cooperation throughout the year.

Although city mail delivery has not been approved by the postal authorities, an inspector recommended the department allow it for Manteca. The department has not notified Postmaster J. M. Luck that the delivery service is to be established.

During Monday night's Board of Trustees meeting, considerable attention was paid to the issue of how to handle the influx of new elementary students. According to Neil Hafley, superintendent, another new school would be needed before long. There is a chance he might make it one more year without double sessions, but he will need more classrooms after that.

Saturday night at the MRPS Hall, the Jaycees 21 distinguished awards banquet presented two of the community's highest honors. Bank of America local manager John Gatto was named Man of the Year. The Outstanding Young Man of the Year was named Duane Martin, of McFall, Burnett and Martin.

Sponsored by the John McFall Recognition Committee, the dinner was a big success, drawing 780 friends of the former congressman. There were overtones of an old fashioned Democratic rally, as well as some campaign rhetoric. People who might have expected McFall's homecoming and first public appearance since his defeat on November 7 by now-Congressman Norman Shumway to be unhappy were mistaken.

To widen and make safer the Highway 120 bypass, not just elected officials but the public will need to give their support and effort. Those who gathered at Carls Jr. restaurant in Manteca to hear about the bypass improvements and discuss ways to secure more state funding agreed. In this meeting, Mayor Jack Snyder organized the event.

The reduction of class sizes and growth in residential area has created a double bind for Manteca Unified School District. While there are now more portables on campus, elementary schools lose blacktop and playing field space because the sites are not available to place them. In a unanimous vote, the board approved Tuesday the district's request for 12 portable classrooms.

With near-record temperatures in January, California will go from a blue state to a dry one. Despite being the wettest month of the year, January could prove to be the driest ever for the crucial Sierra watershed. South San Joaquin Irrigation District General Manager Jeff Shields is getting nervous about it.
